ASKED QUESTIONS
What
is the meaning of the word "Soukous?"
Soukous comes from the French word "secouer," meaning
"to shake." So if you wanna shake, rattle and roll, you
gotta listen to Soukous Radio!
How
are the Tune-In buttons 96kbps and 24kbps different for me?
96kbps is for DSL, ISDN and T-1 internet connections
only. 24kbps will work in dial-up. An ethernet cable may be more
consistent than WiFi. If you cannot connect or the music goes on and off,
24kbps will always work. The highest-quality stream is 96kbps
mp3PRO. However, this stream will ONLY play in full stereo if you
are a Live365 VIP Listener or if you use Winamp along with this
plug-in.
The 96kbps 44kHz stream always plays in full stereo.
Do I
need to pay to listen to the Live365 stream?
No. There is no need to purchase any kind of Live365
subscription. Soukous Radio is a "Live Broadcaster" at
Live365, which means after the initial 40-second announcement, you will be
listening 100% ad-free. If Live365 bugs you to register as a Free
Listener, use shiezamonkey as a username and gotohell as a password.
What
countries does Soukous Radio's music come from?
Congo, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Haiti, Ghana, Mali,
Iran, Guinea, South Africa, Algeria, Morocco, Egypt, Uganda, Barbados, St.
Martin, Dominica, Ethiopia, Equatorial Guinea, Sudan, Lebanon, Kenya, Nigeria, Reunion,
France, Gabon, Benin, Cape Verde, Mozambique, Angola, Senegal, Madagascar,
Tanzania, Iran, Sierra Leone, Mauritania, Lebanon, and Congo-Brazzaville.
What
is playing right now on Soukous Radio?
These are our current and last 19 tracks.
How
many tracks are there in Soukous Radio's playlist?
There are over 3,000 tracks
in Soukous Radio's playlist, playing in random sequence. It will
take you six full days and six full nights to hear it all, so you better
get started right now!
Why
is the sound quality different for some tracks?
Soukous Radio strives to have the most exciting music possible,
obtained from the furthest frontiers of the world of digital music,
delivered to you in the highest quality available. When I first
began broadcasting, I used the MusicMatch program to rip music at
128kbps. For more recent CDs, I now use dbPowerAMP Music Converter
at 320kbps. We do have a few tracks ripped from vinyl, as well as
from analog concert recordings. Volume for all tracks has been set
at a uniform 93db. On occasion, I digitally repair
track flaws, and this should be inaudible to our listeners. I
always try to buy the original CD. However, I will buy compilations
when the original is out of print and unavailable used. If
compilations are mixed, I eliminate the cross-fades, and then fade in and
fade out individual tracks. Some artists will also upload tracks for me to download,
so I cannot have complete quality control in some situations,
although I use no tracks below 96kbps/44,100Hz.
Are
the track titles exactly correct?
With
compilations and with concert recordings and with translations in general, track and album titles are not
always perfect. When this happens, I do research the correct track
extensively at afromix.org
and elsewhere, and try to give you the most accurate track information
possible under the circumstances. Please email
me if you think I should correct artist, track or album.
Can
I play internet radio on my stereo?
Yes,
you can. Just buy a headphone-to-RCA cable (about $5) and run it
from your PC headphone jack to your stereo's AUX jack. Make sure
also to get a 3 prong-2 prong adapter for your power cord, necessary to
eliminate hum distortion from your PC.
